The Lady Gaga Guide To Epic Freelance Writing

by ruthzive · 16 comments

Lady Gaga – you either love her or hate her. She is an undeniable phenomenon, and with lightening speed, she has secured her place at the very top of the pop culture pyramid. Nobody really knew of Lady Gaga four or five years ago. And today, she is everywhere.

Lady Gaga may be controversial, but she did a lot of things right. Her meteoric rise to fame can be attributed to brilliant marketing, steadfast devotion to her crazed fans/Monsters, a hearty dose of the unexpected all against the backdrop of an amazing talent.

As freelance writers, we have a lot to learn from Lady Gaga. And so I present to you The Lady Gaga Guide to Epic Freelance Writing.

Believe in yourself

As Gaga would say, you were born this way. The desire…the need to write courses through your veins.

Don’t deny your implicit talents.

Don’t reject your skills or second guess your capacity to excel.

If you are going to succeed as a freelance writer, you need to believe in yourself. Period.

Differentiate

I am not suggesting that you show up to your next client meeting in an egg pod wearing 24 inch heels and a raw meat suit. However, to be noticed in the blogosphere, you need to be different.

This is The Freelance Writing Blog (blah) – but I am writing to kick my readers butts so that they will acknowledge their talents and earn more!

That’s my angle. What’s yours?

You can differentiate on the basis of topic or tone or service. I tell my freelance writing clients that I’m different than other copywriters – my turnaround is lightening fast, I’m always on budget and I work independently (no hand holding required).

Think of ways in which you can command attention and inspire confidence. What makes you different?

Give your fans what they want

Lady Gaga is arguably one of the most doting celebrities on the scene. She indulges her fans’ needs in an incredibly intimate and attentive manner, and they, in turn, are steadfastly loyal. Gaga fills a void and makes her fans feel great when they ‘connect’ with her.

As freelance writers, it’s important that we provide our clients and our readers with exactly what they want. Understand your stakeholders’ pain points and solve their problems. If you can make them feel good about the interaction (whether it’s as a result of the Ebook they download, or the case study that you write or the article that you craft), they will pass on repeat business.

Choose messages that resonate for your audience

Lady Gaga identified with the marginalized misfit and she knew that if she wrote songs with that profile in mind, she would find success. Turns out, everyone is a marginalized misfit to some degree, so her message is ultimately universal.

But freelance writers need to be able to use the same laser sharp focus to zero in on those messages that will have impact.

Know your audience, eliminate gratuitous language, choose words that pack punch and tell it like it is.

Capitalize on your talent

If you are a gifted writer, don’t settle for lousy pay! Don’t do it.

You are talented and you deserve to be compensated accordingly. You are providing a valuable service.

Set your sights high, think big, expect success and don’t be shy about demanding a respectable rate.

Lady Gaga probably wouldn’t settle for crap pay, why should you?

Take criticism with a grain of salt

Lady Gaga could care less about what others think. She’s got a thick skin, and I suspect that criticism serves as fuel to drive her closer to her goals.

And yet, recently, Gaga inadvertently made some offensive remarks (using the ‘R’ word) about individuals with disabilities. When it was brought to her attention, she immediately issued a very genuine and heartfelt apology. And she went a step further – she started to crusade against the use of the offensive term.

It’s important to ignore criticism borne from jealousy or power or misdirected ‘expertise’. But sometimes, criticism can open your eyes, and even Lady Gaga understands this.

Writers are particularly sensitive to criticism. We need to trust our own instincts, but also be open enough to learn and grow.

Are you a Lady Gaga fan? Does she inspire you to be a better copywriter?

Hi Ruth,

I love the comparison you have made with Lady Gaga to freelance writing! That is truly awesome!

I did see her recent interview and the way she has risen to where she is today- which was really inspirational for me. I loved her message to be yourself, be different and give your fans what they want- something we freelance writers also need to do.

Thanks for sharing and the reminders :)

Hi Harleena. Thanks for your comment. You could probably compare Lady Gaga to ANYTHING, don’t you think? But what really resonates with me is her willingness to take risks and her unwavering belief in herself. I think that freelance writers really need to do more of that! LOVE your updated blog, by the way!

I’ll chime in too Ruth, love this comparison. You are SO right!

Although I don’t share your profession, I can relate to what you write about. I find that a lot of people who find themselves online trying to make their way have a hard time just being themselves. I for one had a problem with it because I’m not that exciting of a person. Who the heck wants to listen to me? I struggled with that for a number of years.

The important thing to remember is you have no idea how many other people are out there thinking the exact same thing. In my case, if I can help just one person realize their full potential, my time here has been worth every single second.

Had Lady Gaga stayed in her room and never ventured into doing what she loved even though she knew she was different we would not have her awesome music today. Always remember to stay true to yourself, step outside your box and show the world what you’re made of. If Lady Gaga can do it, so can you!

Have an awesome day Ruth!

It’s sooooo tempting to get sucked into what you THINK people want. And no matter your profession, you do want to make sure that you deliver ‘the goods’. But if you don’t do that authentically, it’s largely an exercise in futility, don’t you think Adrienne? Now…that said….STOP with the self deprecation! You are exciting! You are interesting to listen to! I hope you don’t struggle with that any longer – you have thousands of fans in the blogosphere! Have great weekend Adrienne.

Great article. It sat in my in-box all week, but I finally got around to reading it. I realized some of these things, but I have not acted upon them. Thank you for reminding me and inspiring me.

Thanks for taking the time to read the post Rekaya. Writing and blogging is a journey – the stars can’t align overnight. I try to do at least one small thing every day to meet my goals (writing, prospecting, enhancing my blog, working on my service offering, etc.) but little reminders certainly help! I’m glad this post did that for you.

Ruth, I pay just about zero attention to pop culture. I’ve been aware for the last year that somebody named Lady Gaga exists, but I didn’t know if she (first thought it might be a he) was an actor, a model, or a singer.

I did eventually learn that she was a pop singer. I still hadn’t heard anything by her until someone shared a youtube vid of her singing “The Lady is A Tramp” with Tony Bennett. Wow! She has a great voice and great presence on camera, and she seemed to truly enjoy singing and interacting with Tony, who is likely in his 80s now.

Hey John. I have four teenage daughters (and a 7 year old son), so it’s near impossible to ignore the pop culture influence. Lady Gaga is indeed a force to be reckoned with – once you’ve been exposed, the impression is pretty indelible. But it speaks to her versatility and marketing savvy that she can duet with Tony Bennett one day, and impact millions of teenage fans the next. Quite remarkable.

Never thought that I could use Lady Gaga to motivate me to work as a freelance writer. Just like what others have said, you made a very good comparison that I and the other reader needed.

Haha – it’s true Carina. Lady Gaga is probably the last person that comes to mind when you think of freelance writing. But I suppose Lady Gaga can inspire just about anything….:-)
